Leeds v Nottm Forest 12/10/96 3.00

Leeds (0) 2 Nottm Forest (0) 0 FT
Wallace 46,90

Two-goal Rod Wallace handed George Graham his first win since taking charge at Elland Road, but the Leeds manager knows he still has a huge task ahead of him on the evidence of this tame encounter.

Forest have not won a league game since their opening-day victory at Coventry and manager Frank Clark must still be wondering how Ian Woan contrived to miss a golden opportunity in the 53rd minute, just seven minutes after Wallace had opened the scoring.

Woan, who has not scored all season, found himself with only Nigel Martyn to beat, but the winger who has been linked with a possible move to Leeds, sliced his shot wide.

It was such a poor miss that Woan held his head in his hands in disgust. A goal at that stage would have breathed fresh life into Forest who occasionally had Leeds in trouble in the air, with Jason Lee often outjumping David Wetherall and Richard Jobson.

Leeds duly ended a run of four successive league defeats, however, as Wallace celebrated his first league goals since December.

He opened the scoring just after the interval by shooting just inside Mark Crossley's left upright after Mark Hateley had nodded down Gary Kelly's long ball from the right.

Wallace had the ball in the net soon afterwards only to be denied by a linesman's flag but he pounced again in the last minute.

Tony Dorigo, making his first senior appearance since February when he came on in the 87th minute, put over a perfect cross for Hateley to set up Wallace for the second time and he made no mistake.
